Why Hydrated Skin Matters | Skincare Tips for Radiant, Healthy Skin

If we had to name the one thing your skin needs most, it would be hydration. When your skin is hydrated, it stays healthy, supple, and resilient to help maintain a natural glow while preventing irritation and breakouts. But how does our skin stay hydrated, and what can we do to support it?

How Your Skin Naturally Maintains Hydration

The skin is a remarkable organ with a tough outer layer called the stratum corneum, which protects the skin from external irritants, bacteria and water loss while locking moisture in. This protective layer is made up of epidermal skin cells and natural oils that work together to prevent your skin from dying out.

The skin naturally produces sebum, an oily secretion that limits bacterial growth and help maintain hydration. Our skin’s natural pH is around 5.5, which is perfect for keeping the barrier strong and preventing irritation.

Good hydration is all about balance. Your skin needs to hold onto water and minimize Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL), which happens when moisture evaporates from your skin's surface. When too much water escapes, your skin becomes dehydrated, dry and more likely to get irritated. That's why using products with ingredients that draw in water such as humectants and seal it in with lipids and occlusives is so important.

How Dear Skin Helps Keep Your Skin Hydrated

At Dear Skin, hydration is at the core of our formulations. We use a blend of ingredients to ensure your skin stays soft, plump, and moisturized throughout the day.

Humectants: The Moisture Magnets

Humectants attract water from the environment and deeper layers of the skin to boost hydration. Glycerin, an ingredient found in all Dear Skin products, is a powerful humectant that attracts moisture to keep the skin soft and smooth.

Aloe Vera Juice, included in our Nourishing Moisturizing Serum, soothes and hydrates the skin while providing essential nutrients.

D-Panthenol, also known as Pro-Vitamin B5, is a deeply hydrating ingredient in our Revitalizing Face Cleanser that helps repair and soothe the skin.

Hyaluronic Acid, present in our Anti-Aging Face Cream, is a superstar humectant that can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water, plumping and hydrating the skin for a youthful glow.

Lipids: The Moisture Sealers

Lipids help reinforce the skin barrier by trapping moisture inside and preventing TEWL. Squalane found in our Anti-aging Face Cream and Nourishing Beard Oil is a lightweight, non-greasy oil that mimics your skin’s natural lipids and helps prevent dehydration.

Macadamia Oil found in our Glow Restoring and Nourishing Beard Oil - Rich in fatty acids, it strengthens the skin barrier while deeply nourishing.

Ginseng Root, known for its revitalizing properties, helps to boost hydration levels, improve moisture retention, and strengthen the skin barrier to prevent moisture loss.

Stay tuned for Part 2, where we dive into how hydration plays a role in preventing irritation and breakouts and how you can build the perfect hydration routine for your skin!
